Churches to participate in Pluralism Sunday

FROM STAFF REPORTS

Two area churches — Unity Church of the Tri-Cities, 703 South Roan St., Johnson City, and First Presbyterian Church, 119 W. F St., Johnson City — will be two of 370 churches nationwide participating in Pluralism Sunday this week.

Unity and First Presbyterian are both members of The Center for Progressive Christianity, a national network of congregations of many denominations. The congregations will celebrate the diversity of the world’s religions during Pluralism Sunday.

The group’s message is that “one does not need to believe that Jesus is the only way to God in order to be a Christian, and that Christian faith is deepened by learning about other religions.”

The visiting speaker on Sunday at Unity will be the Rev. Georgette Cressands, from Asheville, N.C. She will touch on the topic of spiritual diversity in the community.

Unity celebrates Diversity Sunday the third Sunday of every month, inviting speakers from other faiths and spiritual viewpoints to share their message and traditions with its members. Sunday’s service will begin at 10:30 a.m.

For information about Unity, call 975-9159.

Dr. Bill Kirkwood will lead the 9:45 adult forum at First Presbyterian with an “Introduction to Buddhism.” The morning worship service, also marking Pentecost Sunday, will begin at 11.
